School Introduction

OUTLINE

Short History

This school originated in 1852 (Kaei 5) from "The Training House", which was established in Hiro-village ( present Hirogawa-town) by Goryo Hamaguchi. The school policy promoted independent learning and a strong ethic in order to develop students during the end of the Edo period, when Japan started to be more international than before.

The name of the school has changed many times over its long history; Taikyugakusha, Taikyu Junior High School and then amalgamated Arida Girls High School. The school is over 140 years old.

Goryo Hamaguchi is a model in Lafcadio Hearn (Yakumo Koizumi)'s story "Living God".

Origin of the School Name

The school was established in Hirogawa-town in Kaei 5 ( 1852 ) by Goryo Hamaguchi, Toko Hamaguchi and Meigaku Iwasaki. These men established the school hoping that it would last forever allowing students to develop a positive spirit while learning how to learn and work independently.

Taikyu High School is one of the oldest schools in Japan.

Origin of the School Emblem

The school emblem is a design of a mikan-orange leaf with the Japanese kanji for "High" on it. The mikan leaf symbolizes the area, which is famous for its mikan-orange orchards. This design was created by Tetsuji Matsui in 1948, one of the first students of the newly name Taikyu High School. His design was chosen by students, parents and teachers of the school.

Origin of the School Song

The school song was originated as a poem written by Yasuo Shimizu in 1948. The music for the poem was composed by Tamotsu Uemura, a Taikyu High School music teacher at this time. The school incorporates Truth, Health, and Beauty in all educational aspects.
